Austin, blog lack, Dolly Parton, Luscious Pastry, The Olsen twins

Alright, it’s pretty bad, the blog hasn’t been updated in quite a while.  Here’s all the proposed blog topics that never saw the light of day, due to too much actual baking taking up everybody’s time:

why? why? why????

– The Olsen twins, and why they dress so badly. Seriously, what is the point of being the wealthiest elves in the world if you wear clothes that look like they came straight off the Dillard’s clearance rack in 1988?

– The Luscious blog stats which report that some individuals have inadvertently been lead to the site by using keywords like “Jungle Room Decor”, “Kitchen Safety”, and “Hot Chicks.” The hot chick guy must have felt pretty let down, unless he also likes pictures of Dr. Pepper Cake.

– The $40 “Crack Pie” sold by Momofuku in New York, and their biggest fan, Anderson Cooper, who would probably pay $50 if it had a shiny surface in which he could see his own reflection.

– What a crummy reality show Luscious Pastry would make, because nobody gets in screaming arguments or makes out with Bret Michaels in a hot tub. Eewww, Bret Michaels and baking do not go together.

– Sarah Palin, but there was just too much material and Jennifer started to hyperventilate.

– Dolly Parton and how she totally kicks ass and is the Tennessee Whisky Pecan Pie Bar of the country music world, but Anne-Charlotte kept watching the “I will always love you” video over and over again while dabbing away tears, and ran out of time to blog.

There was also some discussion of blogging about food and baking. Well, actually, no there wasn’t, because everybody already knows about the super deliciousness being concocted weekly by our Luscious heroines. Besides, you can’t eat a blog.

Luscious Pastry will be guest-starring at Violet Crown Supper Club again today!  Stop by 1916 Redlands anytime from 4:30-6:30 this evening to grab some of the Fried’s stellar take-out fare, and don’t forget dessert: Jennifer and Anne-Charlotte baked up a big batch of their Chocolate Dulce de Leche Bars with Sea-Salt Caramel, which they are now calling Dulcitas, for short.  We think the Austin-American Statesman put it nicely when they described them as “a savory bar topped with chocolate dulce de leche, a drizzle of caramel and a sprinkle of salt.”

Yes, this is the cookie that won the big Statesman cookie contest,  even garnering a picture on the front page of the Food section! This has been a big problem for the Luscious gals, because Jennifer is really sick of listening to Anne-Charlotte whine, moan, and complain about what a terrible picture it is. It use to be said that a lady should only appear in the newspaper 3 times: when she is born, when she dies, and when she is standing around looking like a total goofball and holding a big platter of cookies. Anne-Charlotte is on track with this, as you can see:

Who is that freak with the cookies?

Jennifer got tired of telling Anne-Charlotte “You don’t really look like a dork in real life, um, all that often,” and finally suggested that some light re-touching of the photo might make Miss ACP feel a whole lot better. The Luscious blog agrees, so as a special favor we gently made some light photographic tweaks that diminished some of the effects of harsh lighting and the deer-in-the-headlights-because-I-don’t-get-out-much facial expression. Here’s the new photo, see if you can spot the subtle airbrushing:

all better now!

Come get your Dulcitas today friends, and email yummy@lusciouspastry.com if you want some set aside for you– selling out is a distinct possibility.

The Jungle Room at Graceland

The Jungle Room

Luscious has something serious to talk to you about, dear friends. As we are sure you are well aware, this coming Sunday, August 16th marks the 32nd anniversary of the death of the King, Elvis Presley. You may think we’re kidding when we say we get a little misty-eyed this time of year, but no — we don’t kid around about Elvis.  Even though we were just tots when the tragedy occurred, we remember just exactly where we were when we found out Elvis had died ( driveway of Aunt Diane’s house, mid-afternoon, Garland, Texas). We remember the tasteful gilt-edged Elvis Presley salt-and-pepper-shakers we acquired on a pilgrimage to Graceland at the tender age of 21. We also remember the party where we nearly got in a fistfight with the art director of WIRED magazine because he dismissed Graceland as nothing but “kitsch”. Um, yeah Black-Turtleneck Boy, if YOU decorated the living room of your modernist San Francisco home with a wall fountain and animal prints and plastic greenery, it would be “kitschy” and you would also probably deserve an ass-whoopin’. But when Elvis did it, it wasFREAKING AWESOME.

Okay, sorry, we’re getting a little worked up here. Really, the point is, there’s only been one person on the planet who could  TCB-in-a-Flash by striking kung fu poses in a spangly, sparkly, bell-bottomed white jumpsuit and look very, very cool doing it, and that person is dead, y’all.

Well, we imagine you’re feeling a little sad now, too. All you can do is take a deep breath and say to yourself “WWED?”  That’s what Luscious does. And we’re pretty sure we know what he’d do.

Available this weekend only, Peanut Butter and Fried Banana Ice Cream. $5 a pint, place  your order at apatterson@southerncombustion.com.

Luscious mini mahogany cake

Luscious mini mahogany cake

Luscious has been cookin’ like a house afire, or maybe more like a housewife afire, but anyway, we’ve been baking a lot of bundt cake. Now this will tell you a little too much about the way Anne-Charlotte grew up, but as a young thing she thought a bundt cake was something that started with Duncan Hines cake mix, then magically (or tragically, depending on your perspective) got Jello pudding all through the middle of it, and finally, was frosted with Cool Whip.  For a deluxe treat: Lifesavers sprinkled over the top. We apologize for that troubling visual, but the point is… well we don’t exactly know what the point of telling you that was, but Anne-Charlotte got her bundt cake thinking straightened out many years ago, and classy Jennifer probably knew better all along.

Bundt cakes can in fact be lovely, made-from scratch delicacies, which perfectly describes the Luscious mini-bundt cakes that have been showing up at some local soirees lately. Our espresso-infused dark chocolate Mahogany cakes are every bit as fabulous as Diana Ross’ outfits in the movie of the same name, and probably better, because our cakes have a meltingly delicious chocolate glaze, whereas Diana’s character in the movie had all those problems with Anthony Perkins. Also debuting recently: our mini Dr. Pepper cakes. You’re probably thinking “I can tell which one of those Luscious gals came up with this trailer park delight”,  but slow down there— our divine Dr. Pepper mini-bundts are rich and slightly spicy glazed butter cakes that have reportedly caused at least one party-goer to throw a bonafide tantrum when seconds were unavailable. Luscious likes that a lot, because we’ve been know to throw a dessert-related tantrum or two ourselves. Available in Original and Chocolate (the cakes, we mean. Well, maybe the tantrums, too.)

This Thursday at 4pm Luscious Pastry will again be joining the Violet Crown Supper Club over on Redlands. This is a stunningly bad segue, because we won’t have our bundt cakes there (although we’ll happy fill orders for those beauties anytime). But this week Luscious had been moved to bake some classic Tres Leches Cake. Creamy, sweet, and served chilled, slices of Tres Leches make a lovely summer dessert. Also, we’re making scrumptious green-chile cheddar corn muffins. Moist with just a little green chili heat, they’re an excellent sidekick for Joel’s yummy Violet Crown comestibles. See you there!

And if we haven’t rambled on enough, just a reminder that Luscious is taking orders for Father’s Day. We’re offering pecan pie bars by the dozen or mini-mahogany cakes  in lovely gift boxes with cards. Or let us know if you have another Luscious treat in mind for your papa bear, and we’ll fix you up.

Chocolate Dulce de Leche bars

Luscious Pastry knows that marriage involves compromise. For instance, a married person must try to be accepting of their spouse’s friends. So, for example, if you are a liberal-minded lady who happens to like to bake, and your dear husband has some very politically conservative friends, well, here’s where some compromise comes in. Even if one such friend is particularly trying, and mockingly refers to our current President as “the Chocolate Messiah”. Okay, Mr. I’m-40-years-old-and-Still-Living-with-My-Parents, we at Luscious just want you to know that you might want to reconsider that messiah phrase, and apply it instead to our Chocolate Dulce de Leche Bars.

They might not save the world (or maybe!), but our new chocolate dessert bars are crazy good. We fold dark chocolate into a dulce de leche custard, then spread it over shortbread that’s got a little spicy kick to it. The result is rich but light with a complex flavor, and of course plenty of chocolately love going on.

Luscious is sweet, but Luscious can also be salty. No we’re not referring to our joke about the 12-inch pianist, but rather a savory new snack we’re calling Cheese Wafers. They are crunchy, cheese infused little biscuits, and they are addictive, and we would be more than happy to get you hooked.

No Violet Crown Supper Club this week, which is hard to live without, but we didn’t think you should have to go through the weekend without a little Luscious. We think our Cheese Wafers and Chocolate Dulce de Leche Bars are the perfect sophisticated weekend snacks, so we’re offering them from 2:45-3:15 this Friday after school at Brentwood park, then from 3:30 until we run out at Anne-Charlotte’s house (email ACP for directions).

One last night note before we get back to the kitchen: Luscious is taking orders for father’s day!  We delivered prettily boxed gifts of Luscious Pastry treats to teachers and moms last week with great success, so we will be all over father’s day. Check out the link to our menu page for some Luscious gift ideas.
