Those Luscious girls never argue with each other. For one thing, they get along really well, and for another, they’re  usually already worn out from arguing with their children and husbands. But the other day, they actually disagreed about what could be called a tart. Jennifer said that, technically speaking, tarts have a pastry crust, and Anne-Charlotte said she knew quite a few back in high school, including pretty much the whole drill team. Jennifer has to put up with a lot.

sweet juicy plums, waiting become a Luscious dessert

sweet juicy plums, soon to be dessert

Tart talk at LPWH (Luscious Pastry World Headquarters) can only mean that a flurry of Lusciousness is on the horizon. Luscious will be back at  Violet Crown Supper Club this Thursday September 3rd, showcasing Indian Summer Plum Tarts (the pastry kind) with Mascarpone Cream, yeah baby. Plus some special brownies. No, no, no- not THAT kind of special brownies, Luscious doesn’t want to give customers an excuse to lay around on the living room floor listening to Dark Side of the Moon. These brownies are special as in they’re NOT those dry, crumbly kind of lame-ass brownies that are always letting people down. Jennifer’s whipping up some incredibly rich, moist, chocolately brownies, which are are the opposite of lame-ass, therefore let’s call them Jennifer’s Bad-ass Toffee’d Brownies. VCSC is expecting a crowd this week, so don’t be shy about asking us to set some tarts or brownies aside for you, we love pre-orders.

It seems like that would be enough for one week, but sometimes Luscious just can’t stop. Just around the corner we have the Labor Day weekend, during which hard work is celebrated by not doing any. Get in the spirit by lazing around in your pajamas all morning, and eating brunch treats somebody else cooked. Luscious is offering the following for Labor Day weekend:
– Baked Blueberry French Toast, $11 for an nice-sized pan
– Cherry Pecan and Chocolate Cherry Scones, $9 for a dozen petite scones
– Upside-Down Ham and Swiss Breakfast Tart, $12. Yes, this is the one that caused all the controversy and catty drill team comments. So maybe it’s really a casserole.  The class of ’89 drill team, on the other hand…

Place your Labor Day brunch order by Friday morning at apatterson@southerncombustion.com. Or do you need a Luscious dessert for a Labor Day get together? Just let us know, operators are standing by.

The Jungle Room at Graceland

The Jungle Room

Luscious has something serious to talk to you about, dear friends. As we are sure you are well aware, this coming Sunday, August 16th marks the 32nd anniversary of the death of the King, Elvis Presley. You may think we’re kidding when we say we get a little misty-eyed this time of year, but no — we don’t kid around about Elvis.  Even though we were just tots when the tragedy occurred, we remember just exactly where we were when we found out Elvis had died ( driveway of Aunt Diane’s house, mid-afternoon, Garland, Texas). We remember the tasteful gilt-edged Elvis Presley salt-and-pepper-shakers we acquired on a pilgrimage to Graceland at the tender age of 21. We also remember the party where we nearly got in a fistfight with the art director of WIRED magazine because he dismissed Graceland as nothing but “kitsch”. Um, yeah Black-Turtleneck Boy, if YOU decorated the living room of your modernist San Francisco home with a wall fountain and animal prints and plastic greenery, it would be “kitschy” and you would also probably deserve an ass-whoopin’. But when Elvis did it, it wasFREAKING AWESOME.

Okay, sorry, we’re getting a little worked up here. Really, the point is, there’s only been one person on the planet who could  TCB-in-a-Flash by striking kung fu poses in a spangly, sparkly, bell-bottomed white jumpsuit and look very, very cool doing it, and that person is dead, y’all.

Well, we imagine you’re feeling a little sad now, too. All you can do is take a deep breath and say to yourself “WWED?”  That’s what Luscious does. And we’re pretty sure we know what he’d do.

Available this weekend only, Peanut Butter and Fried Banana Ice Cream. $5 a pint, place  your order at apatterson@southerncombustion.com.

dessert, Lynyrd Skynyrd

Just a quick post friends, probably full of typos, but there’s important news here…You know, sometimes you think you know a person, and then they totally surprise you. Take the Luscious gals for example, they know each other quite well, right? Well, this week, Jennifer really put Anne-Charlotte into shock (no, it was not the other way around this time.)  They decided to have a low-key week and just make one thing for VSCS,  so Jennifer would bake and then Anne-Charlotte would do all the other stuff they have to do AFTER they bake but that they almost always forget about until the last minute and then they panic and run around like crazy. Okay, so Anne-Charlotte was expecting Jennifer to make some elegant little delicacy, but instead Jennifer went and got TOTALLY Paula Deen on her!! She made these insane, dark chocolate-peanut butter bars with Snicker Bars IN THEM, not sprinkled on top but BAKED IN THEM and then there’s this carmelized buttery shortbread on the bottom and peanuts and everything. They’re all gooey and chocolate sweet and peanut butter salty and honestly they’re just this side of white trash. Who knew Jennifer could be so bad? This produced feelings of intense emotion in Anne-Charlotte. She:
–  wept with joy
–  snarled at a husband who meekly requested one in his lunchbox
– came very close to having an actual heart attack when one bar almost fell on the floor  (a slow-motion, stuntwoman-like rescue was performed)
 – felt sad when she realized that she should have just let it fall on the floor and then she’d have an excuse to eat it herself.

Then Anne-Charlotte joyfully went out and bought Jennifer a Lynyrd Skynyrd t-shirt and a pack of Virginia Slims. Those girls are soulmates.

Luscious is calling these little wonders Chocolate-Peanut Butter Bad Girl Bars. $2 each, or 3 for $5. Available today at Violet Crown Supper Club, 4pm til they run out or  Anne-Charlotte starts dropping ’em on the floor.

Austin, baking, gourmet, hot weather, humor, July 4th

Yeah, it’s hot.

“How hot is it?”  Well, Luscious is gonna tell you.  Basically, it’s hot as hell. It’s so hot that the when the weather channel switches to the local Austin forecast, instead of a little sun picture, they now show a drawing of a person engulfed in flames. It’s so hot that you could get away with dressing like those trampy chicks from “Rock of Love” by blaming it on the heat. (Luscious already tried this and it worked great! Well…okay, it wasn’t Jennifer.) It’s hot enough to peel the goddamn paint off the goddamn walls. It’s definitely hot enough to get away with swear words in a blog. It’s WAY too hot to bake. Unless a person’s f**king crazy…or they’re Luscious.

After all, our favorite temperature is 350 degrees, especially when there’s butter and sugar involved. So with all this gorgeous summer fruit to be had and the Independence Day weekend coming up, Luscious figures it’s our birthright as U.S. citizens to crank up the AC and bake cobblers all damn day if we want to. And yum, we want to!  Fellow Americans, we are taking orders for star-spangled cobblers…and cookies! The details:

Luscious 4th of July cookiesThe cobblers ($14) are full-size– about 6 big servings, and the flavors, mmm… Ginger Peach or Berry-Berry-Berry.  Luscious knows that a cobbler’s best friend is homemade ice cream, so we’ve got that too: Honey-Vanilla by the pint ($5), friends. That should be enough  scrumptiousness for one week, but remember we’re crazy: we are also offering sweet star-shaped sugar cookies by the dozen ($6)– perfect nibbles for fireworks-gazing.

To order or inquire about our 4th of July cobbler, ice cream, and cookies, email us at annecharlottep@gmail.com by Tuesday, June 30th. All orders will be available for pickup from 4-6pm at Anne-Charlotte’s on July 2nd (or we can work out other arrangements– whatever it takes to get you your Luscious.)  Jeepers, we almost forgot to tell you– drop by your own 8x8ish pan for your cobbler, and we’ll knock a buck off the price. We’re environmental like that.

One last, very sincere note. Luscious Pastry is off to an amazingly successful start, and we are so, so grateful to everyone who has been supporting us by eating our goodies or reading the blog or cheering us on. Wow, we love you, too! Truly.

Austin, baking, challah rolls, dessert, humor

Yes!  Luscious Pastry will be at Violet Crown Supper Club this Thursday. Since our corn muffins were a hit a couple of weeks ago, we’re going the bread route again this week with challah rolls: Jennifer’s homemade challah dough, baked as yummy rolls, perfect with Joel’s soups and veggies. Anne-Charlotte is really excited about the challah rolls, because she’s been looking forward to cracking jokes like “Our rolls will make you hollah!” and singing her own made-up Jewish-and-bread-themed lyrics to “Hollaback Girl”. The next time you see  her, you should quickly stick your fingers in your ears– you’ve been warned, okay?

Luscious Lemon-Blueberry Parfaits

Luscious Lemon-Blueberry Parfaits

This week’s sweet treats are taking the form of chilled Lemon-Blueberry Parfaits. Billowy swirls of cool lemon custard atop blueberry compote are an elegant antidote to these crazy hot temps. Lounge around in your sweltering house while wearing only a silky slip and slowly eating one of our cool creamy parfaits, and you will feel just as languidly sexy as Jessica Lange in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, especially if you bitch at you husband in a southern drawl between bites.  He’ll probably like it, even more so if he’s eating a parfait, too.

FATHER’S DAY– LAST CHANCE
Speaking of HOT! We have a few things still available for father’s day weekend:
– one mini Mahogany bundt cake
– 12 pecan pie bars
– 12 dulce de leche bars

email us at apatterson@southerncombustion.com to order.

COMING SOON Fourth of July cobblers and a Luscious t-shirt contest!

pretty presents from Luscious

pretty presents from Luscious

Let’s be honest— father’s day is kind of a pain in the ass.  Luscious loves dads, but grown men are a notoriously difficult group for whom to purchase presents. Whereas most mamas feel like royalty on Mother’s Day if another member of the household will just fold a basket of laundry without being threatened, achieving the same effect on Father’s Day would require the gift of a Stratocaster signed by all the members of ZZ Top, a James Bond-style speed boat, or Heidi Klum. But to quote an old Yellow Rose radio ad (which is not something Luscious expected itself to do) “What else do guys like? Food.” Sorry Heidi,  delicious Luscious Pastry will be saving the day this year. And by the way, Mrs. Seal, don’t get any ideas about becoming the first Luscious spokesmodel, even if you are willing to be paid in Blackberry Crumble Bars. We’ve noted that your dress size appears to be significantly smaller than the number of children you’ve delivered, and that just makes Luscious want to cry.

But Luscious will NOT cry, because we’re pretty thrilled about making Father’s Day goodies this month. We’re offering our chocolate-glazed, espresso-infused Mahogany mini-bundts in cute gift boxes, and delectable Pecan Pie Bars by the dozen, also gift-boxed up.  And we’ll gladly  fill Father’s Day orders for other items, so if you think another Luscious treat is just the thing, or if you have something special in mind, just ask. Some might assume that Luscious Pastry is not in the same class as a cigarette boat that shoots flaming oil at pursuers, but Luscious suspects that if Miss Moneypenny had baked a Dr. Pepper Cake for 007, she could have gotten him to settle down. Email your father’s day order to  apatterson@southerncombustion.com, and we will co-ordinate delivery with you.

Also this month…. On Friday, June 13th, we will have a very limited number of Mahogany mini-bundts available, as well as a new item– Sparkling Lemon Bars. If you’d like us to reserve some for you, just email. And Violet Crown Supper Club is coming on June 18th, we’ll have some new treats…stay tuned….
